Saturday was like Purgatory. And not the "Lost" TV show kind of Purgatory either, but the really bad kind. I know, I just angered the "Lost" fans out there, but I'm willing to take that risk.

We knew that we were not going to get out of Denver on our original flight to Albuquerque, but we also knew that we had to get to Denver if we wanted any chance of getting to ABQ. Where were we to stay until we could catch a Greyhound bus? As it happens, my cousin, Dr. Little Rob lives in downtown Denver on Market Street, in the ultra-hip Premier Lofts apartment building, across from Coors Field (too bad the season's over).

Instead of taking the 9-hour Greyhound trip, we secured a spot on a flight at 11:15 this morning (it later got delayed till 11:50 a.m.). Thinking we were so smart and clever, we arrived at the airport via the express bus at 8:25 a.m. Almost 3 hours early--ha! We waited and waited and waited in the line just to check in...we got up to the front of the check-in line at about 11:10. Along the way, of course, Jorge made friends with everyone in line, wrote down recommended books and websites, and carried luggage for single mothers traveling with small children. Knowing that the line to go through security was even longer, the agent bumped us down to standby. Gee, we'd only been "standing by" for 3 hours already. Security line was not as fun as the comparitively delightful check-in line, and we finally sat down at our gate at 2 p.m.

We got really lucky and got the last 2 tickets of standby, and were with Mom and Mark by 5 p.m. (minus the piece of luggage with all of the gifts, but that story ended happily, too).

The first thing I said (after symbolically kissing the Albuquerque pavement)? "Sorry we're 20 1/2 hours late!"

Now, time to light the Luminarias and celebrate the miracle of Festivus! Merry everything, everyone!

the easiest cookies ever

Trailer Park cookies

(so-called because this recipe was discovered by Curry's mom while she was traveling by RV throughout the USA!)

The cakemix cookie recipe is very simple:
1 box cake mix
1 cup dry cereal
1 egg
1 stick of butter

Roll into 1-inch balls, place onto ungreased cookie sheet, bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes.

The original flavor is lemon, using lemon cake mix (extra moist variety if possible) and rice krispies cereal. Also good is spice cake mix and a cup of raisin bran with some extra raisins thrown in, plus a few teaspoons of water added to make it moister.
Also try: white cake mix with fruit loops, or chocolate cake mix with cocoa puffs...

YUM!

spike it!

Fairmont Heights High School Volleyball Schedule

All games are at 5:30 p.m.
HOME GAMES ARE IN BOLD

9/05/06 TUES CENTRAL
9/07/06 THURS @ F DOUGLAS
9/14/06 THURS FORESTVILLE
9/19/06 TUES @ SURRATTSVILLE
9/21/06 THURS @ CENTRAL
9/26/06 TUES POTOMAC
9/28/06 THURS LARGO
10/03/06 TUES @ DUVAL
10/05/06 THURS @ FRIENDLY
10/10/06 TUES GWYNN PARK
10/12/06 THURS @ FORESTVILLE
10/17/06 TUES @ ELE. We actually stopped in town to visit the Spam Museum--yum!
This library is a BRAND NEW building, set right on a pond, and is gorgeous! Curry got all of the architect's info and George took plenty of pictures to show Martha when we get back to Eastham, all too soon.
Also today, we stopped in cute little Blue Earth, Minnesota, where George made a spectacle of himself, walking down the middle of Main Street taking pictures of the beautiful brick buildings. We stopped in the Rainbow Food Co-op, recommended by Dar Williams in her book The Tofu Tollbooth, and bought tons of good road trip snacks (no SPAM, however).
Yesterday, we drove through our last of the "side roads"--we saw Mount Rushmore (or the "Big Head Presidents" as George calls it), but before that, we marvelled at the CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL! Curry's mom, Donia, wrote a novel (as yet unpublished) that features the memorial prominently in the plot, and she would have plotzed if we had come all this way and NOT gone to see this magnificent and ambitious (that's an understatement) sculpture in the mountain. We said a sad goodbye to high elevations and gorgeous views and drove down into flat Minnesota, where the folks are friendly and the portions are plentiful! Tonight: Gary, Indiana!

Red Lodge, Montana

Tripometer: 3,862.3
Word of explanation: we were "off the grid" for the past several days and were unable to update the blog online...and we have also been unable to upload pictures for a while...
However, we kept up a "low tech" version of the blog (otherwise known as Curry's diary/journal), so SCROLL DOWN to catch up on our adventures!
(updating this from the Red Lodge, Montana library--one of the Carnegies!)

Columbus, Montana

Odometer: 3434.8
Camping is hard work! It took us 3 hours to break down camp, which put us a little behind schedule. Curry cried several times at the thought of leaving this beautiful place, which will soon look very different, as Pete and Robin have sold the lower part of their property and will move the current buildings "up the hill" closer to the pond.
However, we will NOT miss the fear of bears (this fear was much stronger in Curry; practically non-existent in George).
After going to a bronze gallery (expensive but beautifully made pieces from local resources) and getting a mini-tour of the workshop there, we headed to Seeley Lake in search of Deer Country Quilts, a cute and nationally renowned quilt store right on Route 83. Along the way, we went to Montana Artisans Center, which we heard about on the very cool local station, Montana Radio Cafe, Kalispell's answer to the Cape's own WOMR. The artisans center was not a gift store as we'd thought, but a custom wood furniture maker who gladly showed us around his showroom (everything here was very expensive, too--it costs a lot to have beautiful surroundings!). Route 83 runs through Flathead National Forest and a Montana state forest as well.
We were lamenting the fact that Cody, Wyoming (our destination) seemed so far away when we noticed a shortcut. It said, "Garnet Ghost Town=18 miles." Forgetting the Jesuit priest's advice and our own experience taking the extreme offroad route in Pine Ridge, we bravely started down the "shortcut." It was a skinny logging road that wound through a University of Montana experimental forest (whatever THAT is...). We climbed up the mountain (in the Garnet range of the Rockies) and enjoyed fantastic views (as it seemed like we were driving off the edge of the world!). The Garnet Ghost Town had an admission fee, so we just lingered in the parking lot, reading the signage and letting the dogs have a breather. Up the path came the couple driving the only other vehicle in the lot, a pickup truck from Austin. We struck up a conversation and found out that they are new full-time RV-ers and one of the books that inspired them to choose the lifestyle? STEELES ON WHEELS!!! They were so excited to meet a "character" from the book that they took a picture of Curry (although we might have sensed that they wished they'd met Travis, instead, who features much more prominently in the book; Mom always liked him best). These new RV-ers have already been to the Arctic Circle--check out their travels on their website!
After getting back on the highway after our 2-hours-out-of-the-way shortcut, we did the math and realized that we'd never make Cody at a decent hour. So here we stay in Columbus, Montana, not horribly far from our original destination, and we plan to get an early start tomorrow!

Kalispell, Montana

Another gorgeous morning, with us waking up to a beautiful sunrise over the mountains and anxious dogs at the gate of the pen. Everyone except George went for a walk on the property, discovering a small colony of buildings made from reclaimed wood and recyled farm structures (a few old chicken coops, for example). Jadwiga pup, lightning rod for bodies of water, discovered the pond that Curry remembered from her trip to Pete & Robin's property ten years ago.
Enjoyed a delicious breakfast of turkey bacon, eggs, and bread. Curry still thinks this is the prettiest part of the country...when we can finally upload pictures, you can judge for yourself.
Woke up stiff from camping out on the cold ground (well, under a tent). The dogs slept fairly well (once they stopped woofing at every little sound in the forest) in Pete & Robin's dog pen.
Ate at the Avalanche Creek Cafe, although a downscale-looking diner/casino (they're everywhere here!) called Nickel Charlie's was recommended to us. It's the "cute" versus "authentic" schism that has been prevalent during this entire trip.
Library was too busy for us to check email/update blog, so we went back to our campsite and chilled out. Wanted to watch the REDSKINS game, and we needed to do our laundry, so we did both at the IMPERIAL cleaners and laundromat, the best laundromat ever. There were well-kept bathrooms, an available TV, a Baskin Robbins across the street, and oh yeah, clean washers and dryers. Jean, the friendly laundromat worker (laundress?), terrorized Curry and amused George with stories of bear sightings and encounters. Once the laundromat closed (Jean kept it open till our dryer cycle finished), we drove to City Brew to try to check our email...the bad news is, they didn't have computers. The good news is, they had a TV--two very young construction workers were watching something--NOT the game. They were so genial that they gladly switched the channel, although they had no interest in the game. They seemed curious about us, though, and also tried to scare us with bear stories. By the time the coffeehouse closed, the Redskins were rallying (yes! they made the 2-point conversion!) and we quickly headed over to the first bar we could find, the VFW in downtown Kalispell. It was empty except for some ski-bum-looking 20-somethings, friends of the bartender. We got there in time to watch Coles make a spectacular catch as time ran out, but stayed for a game of pool (George won) and some Moose Drool (the local beer, out of Missoula).

Billings, Montana

Odometer: 2, 144.5
Today we went "off the grid," quite literally, when we left Lamoine and Ully and went in search of the site of the Wounded Knee massacre. We looked around the cemetery there and talked to a teenager who sold us some "arts and crafts." The visitor's center there was closed, and left to our own devices, we turned down a road that was barely navigable for a 4-wheel drive, let alone a Ford Focus wagon with an X-Cargo on top and 200 lbs. of dog inside!
After what seemed like forever, we arrived at the Red Cloud Indian School, run by the Jesuits. It is the premier school on the reservation, but as Phil, one of the Jesuit teachers who we met on the grounds told us, it still has a long way to go. Along with Phil we met two volunteer teachers, who get free room and board in exchange for a small teacher's stipend. "It's a great place to be if you don't know what you want to do with your life!" one of them told us. When we told them of our extreme Fear Factor-like route that we took to get there, Phil laughed, and gave us what might be the second major quote of this trip:
"Just because the road is there doesn't mean it's on the map!"
Well said.
After leaving the school, we went to our final destination in South Dakota, the town of Pine Ridge. This was disappointing, as it is a VERY depressed little village. We were hit up for money twice, just getting gas. It was a sad eye-opener, but it was important for us to see what is really happening to many folks on the reservation.
After gassing up the car, off we went towards Route 212, which took us through the rest of South Dakota, a corner of Wyoming, and here in southeast Montana.
Tomorrow, we will arrive in our ultimate destination: KALISPELL!

"We've been waiting all day for you!"

IMG_0694.JPG
Here's Angie, who seems to be Kyle, South Dakota's mother hen. Her tiny Mexican Indian food hut is located conveniently on the main road through the Lakota reservation; across the street from the restaurant is a large school, which ensures business from children and teens in the town. Angie helped so many folks and gave out so much advice during our brief meal at La India Bonita that when people said her name to thank her, Curry thought that they were calling her "Auntie." Without Angie, we would have never discovered the wonderful UPO and Lamoine and Ully. Truly one of the singular quirky moments we've had on this trip, so far!

Originally uploaded by Curry Rose.

Kyle, South Dakota

Today at about 5 p.m., we pulled into Kyle, South Dakota, after driving through the amazing Badlands National Park. We wanted to go to the Lakota Cultural Center (or whatever it's called), but it was closed. In the same parking lot, however, was La India Bonita, where Angie, the owner, exclaimed, "Where have you guys been? We've been waiting all day for you!" We enjoyed a very inexpensive "indian taco" (open-faced, on frybread) and watched as most of the small town's residents came in and out of the cafe. We struck up a conversation with Angie, who kicked into networking mode (truly, she seems always to be in that particular mode--she knows everything about everybody) when she learned that we were looking for a place to stay. "Oh, you need to stay at UPO. Let's call Lamoine!" She sent us down a dirt road and at the big UPO sign, we turned down the lane into a beautiful 80-acre farm, with horses, dogs, cats, and a very friendly bed-and-breakfast couple. UPO, we later found out, is an acronym for "Unique Personal Options," and it certainly was as advertised. Lamoine Pulliam, Ed. D. is a Lakota Sioux indian who runs a Veterans program at the Oglala Lakota College. Ully, his German-born wife who came to South Dakota as an exchange student and never left, teaches middle school in one of the reservation's schools, in Manderson. We rode along with Lamoine to feed the horses and then watched a spectacular sunset, finishing off the evening sitting with the ranch's other guests, sipping tea and telling stories...

Mitchell, South Dakota

Odometer: 1,846.3
Mitchell, South Dakota is another typical Western town, with a historic Main Street and small, safe neighborhoods. Mmmmm...corny!
After another night of Motel 6's hospitality, we had two interesting "lost and found" experiences:
1)Curry's earring went missing ("It was just here a second ago!") and was only discovered hanging off of her wrist, attached to her watchstrap, after several minutes of looking, when she was gesticulating wildly with her hands.
2)George's beloved coffee travel mug was left on the car roof as we were getting ready to go to Bette's Diner, but when we parked in front of the diner--wow!--the mug was still on top of the car! (a testament to Curry's smooth driving, perhaps?)
Off to Wall and Pine Ridge!

a side trip--Yankton, South Dakota

Well, we decided to take a scenic route, not remembering that a scenic route loses most of its value after the sun goes down...anyway, check out the Yankton, South Dakota library website for a glimpse of where we are driving through right now...and once again, we find ourselves in a library at closing time, so off we go!

being there coffee house

being there coffee house
Originally uploaded by Curry Rose.

Right now I (Curry) am sitting in what might be the coolest place in Iowa--the Being There Coffee House on First Avenue North in Altoona.
It is a one-room establishment with a full espresso bar and 4 beers on tap. The walls are painted mustard yellow with literary and musical quotes painted in maroon on the walls. There's a cool mural painted by Tim Wirth on one of the walls. He's a friend of a friend of the owner, but look out for big things from this Picasso-inspired artist!
When I walked in, I was immediately greeted with this quote from Wilco's _Summerteeth_:
"Let's turn our prayers
into outrageous dares
and mark our page
in a future age."
(which might well be the mission statement of this road trip and blog!)
The owner, Kara is really sweet and cool. She started the coffee house about 3 months ago and is still building up a clientele, but the coffee house has a HUGE set of fans in my parents, who come here almost everyday for the good food, nice company and, of course, the WI-FI!
George has already sampled the espresso many times over and is currently asking each new customer who walks in 1)who they're planning to vote for in November and 2)what they do here in Altoona and where they live. Can you tell he misses social interaction by being cooped up in the car all day?
By the way, try to guess the inspiration behind the coffee house's name? Hint: I already mentioned it once in this post.
Hey, if you're ANYWHERE in Iowa, get over to BEING THERE right now, order up the breakfast casserole, and tell Kara and Corey we say hi!

Altoona, Iowa

mom & curry & quilt
Originally uploaded by Curry Rose.

Here we are in our "intermediate" destination, Altoona--temporary home to Mom and Mark Steele. Thinking that he had some sort of problem with the way she was passing him, she moved behind him into his lane, thus allowing him (presumably) to do as he wished. Once our car had moved into the truck's lane, however, he threw on his brakes, as a final insult (for what, we had no idea). We would have chalked up his behavior as just another trucker making his own entertainment had he not been so ANGRY. Making us stop short was not just annoying, it was dangerous, and if he was doing it to us, it was probably not his first time, so we picked up our cellphone (I knew it would come in handy at some point...) and dialed the toll-free number printed on the back panel of the trailer. George calmly reported the incident and the truck's ID number to the operator.
So, HERE'S TO YOU, Consolidated Refrigeration driver #R35023. Anyway, check out the link above for pics of their sweet Victorian houses that line the main road (Highway 12, Chicago Street).
Curry had a nice conversation with Reference Librarian Heidi, whose ancestor was a Massachusetts Bay Colony resident, back in the day. It took a seemingly inordinate amount of time to check in because the computers went down right as we arrived. No matter, George struck up a conversation with the night desk worker, who we learned has a son in middle school. By the finish of our check-in transaction, we learned 1) the boy gets detention a little too often, and that's stressful on a mother, and 2) the late bus schedule for the North Syracuse School District isn't what it should be.
George's WONDERFUL best friend from college, Steve Russell, was supposed to meet us here tonight to play a little cribbage with George, but somehow he was convinced that we were in the Days Inn, so he got a little lost. We'll meet him <img src="www.flickr.com/photos/541488.jpg"alt="Russell" />for breakfast tomorrow...tomorrow, when we hope that the dogs will calm down enough to eat a little something!

...and we're OFF!

.flickr-photo { border: solid 1px #000000;
